Barnsley - men mentioned in 'Barnsley Pals' by Jon Cooksey

Jon's book about the 13th and 14th Battalions of the York & Lancaster regiment was first published in 1988 and the latest edition came out in 2008 and is available from Pen & Sword publishers. http://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/Barnsley-Pals-Hardback/p/1586 An invaluable tool in the research of Barnsley men in WW1 it contains many pictures of the men and reconstructed nominal rolls for both regiments (incomplete, but very useful). -------------- Not all the men who served in the 13th and 14th Y&L were from Barnsley, which confuses people sometimes. Later drafts of men who joined the battalions came from all over the country, and in February 1918 the 14th battalion ceased to exist with men transferred into all kinds of different regiments. This means you can find men in the Durham Light Infantry, for example, who started their army service in the Pals. ------------- If you are having trouble adding information to men in this Community on Lives of the First World War I would be happy to help. ----- Linda Hutton IWM Volunteer barnsleyhistorian@gmail.com
