Barnsley - Penistone Men

Penistone is a small town nearly 8 miles to the west of Barnsley town centre. At the beginning of the 20th century it was more closely tied to Sheffield and this is reflected in the enlistment of many local men into the Sheffield Pals, the 12th Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment. The main war memorial in the Market Place lists 57 names; there are also names remembered inside St John's Church, at the local British Legion, in the Methodist Chapel and at Penistone Grammar School. See our index page for a full list http://www.barnsleywarmemorials.org.uk/2014/05/war-memorials-p.html -------------------------- In 2014 a book was produced by the Penistone History Group, "The Stories Behind the Names" remembering 65 men connected with the area.
