Barnsley - Grimethorpe Men

Grimethorpe is a large township on the eastern side of Barnsley. Predominantly a mining area until the pit closures of the 1980s it was the setting for the film 'Brassed Off'. The War Memorial outside St Luke's Church lists 65 WW1 names with regimental details, 20 WW2 names and the names of 3 men killed in recent conflicts. There is a large Roll of Honour in the nearby Grimethorpe Working Men's Club listing men who served and returned. This memorial has been researched by George Tilley and others and their work can found in the local library and in Barnsley Archives. ------------ If you are having trouble adding information to men in this Community on Lives of the First World War I would be happy to help. ----- Linda Hutton IWM Volunteer
