Barnsley - Ardsley & Stairfoot Men

Ardsley lies about 4 miles to the east of Barnsley town centre. It was a long stretched out village rising up Doncaster Road towards Darfield, which was the mother parish, until the road widening of the late 20th century swept away many houses and pubs. Stairfoot, as the name suggests, lies at the foot of the hill. A book about the area, 'Ardsley & Stairfoot Revisited' has been written by Tony Heald & Michael Chance and published in 2008. There are several memorials in Ardsley parish church, some from the now closed Methodist Chapel on Doncaster Road http://www.barnsleywarmemorials.org.uk/2014/05/war-memorials-a.html and a large Roll of Honour in the Wesleyan Methodist on Hunningley Lane http://barnsleywarmemorials.blogspot.com/2014/04/stairfoot-wesleyan-reform-church-roll.html The men remembered on family gravestones in Ardsley Cemetery have also been included in this Community. --------------- If you are having trouble adding information to men in this Community on Lives of the First World War I would be happy to help. ----- Linda Hutton IWM Volunteer barnsleyhistorian@gmail.com
