Barnsley - Royston Men

Royston is a large village 4 miles north of Barnsley town centre. On the northern boundary of the borough the village has traditionally kept itself separate to the extent that a local dialect influenced by 19th and early 20th century incomers from Wales and Staffordshire can still be identified. The ornate war memorial in the church yard commemorates 97 WW1 and 26 WW2 names and proudly displays a plaque to Albert Shepherd, Barnsley's only WW1 VC winner. The Royston Local History Group have written a book about the area during WW1, "Royston and District in the Great War" which is available direct from them. http://www.barnsleywarmemorials.org.uk/2014/01/royston-st-john-baptist-church-street.html ---------------- If you are having trouble adding information to men in this Community on Lives of the First World War I would be happy to help. ----- Linda Hutton IWM Volunteer barnsleyhistorian@gmail.com
