Barnsley - Men who fell on The First Day of the Battle of the Somme - 1 July 1916 - BAR70 Somme Centenary Artwork

2016 was the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. For Barnsley this is a particularly poignant commemoration as it marks the day the Barnsley Pals (who were specifically the 13th and 14th Battalions of the York and Lancaster Regiment) first 'went over the top' en masse. However many other Barnsley men also fell on 1 July 1916. This Community will Remember all 297 (as recorded 1 July 2016). --------- See also Barnsley - The Rest of July 1916. As the date of death of many men who 'went over the top' on 1 July 1916 is uncertain these two communities should be regarded as complementary. ------- In 2016 Barnsley Council obtained funding for a temporary artwork commemorating these men, (but note that we have continued to discover more Barnsley men who fell on this day since the artwork was commissioned so not all are included). ------------------ If you are having trouble adding information to men in this Community on Lives of the First World War I would be happy to help. ----- Linda Hutton IWM Volunteer
